Rob St. John & Tommy Perman

A permanent installation in Chalmers Close, Edinburgh. Part of Open Close.

As our connection to the internet increases, our connection to the natural world decreases. We have taken our language with us and the internet abounds with natural metaphors (clouds, tweets, streams). We have created a series of simple typographic artworks which have taken this idea and related it to the topography of the Closes.

The artworks also pay homage to the areas’ industrial heritage and strong connection to the print industry. The gap site between North Gray’s Close and Chalmers Close was once a tannery supplying leather for book binders. Much of the typography used is based on fonts created by the famous Miller & Richard type foundry was just a short walk to the south in Reikie’s Court off Nicolson Street.
