Mono Culture is a series of greyscale images mostly depicting the rooftops of Aberdeen. I became fascinated with the number of television antennae I could see – there spiky forms were very intriguing and great to draw. I enjoyed the opportunity to develop a narrative as the book progressed. It is predominantly in shades of black but every so often I threw in an unexpected bold colour adding drama to the turn of a page.
“Tommy Perman’s digital images of urban roofscapes are immediately familiar to us. We inadvertently see these kinds of images each day. But are they recognisable to us? Do we really process the information around us to build up a visual reference map of the cities in which we live? Do we look up? This book shows us a new landscape, it is the view many of us will see from our homes and offices and invariably the scene which makes many of us think of security and belonging.”
